Social learning theory Flashcards
What is social learning theory
Learning through observation and imitation of others
What is vicarious reinforcement
Behaviour that is seen to be rewarded is more likely to be copied
What are the four key mediating processes involved In imitating behaviour
Attention
Retention
Reproduction
Motivation
What does it mean by attention
The observer must be watching and paying attention to the behaviour being modelled
What is retention
The behaviour must be remembered
What does it mean by reproduction
The observer has to be physically and mentally able to reproduce the behaviour
WhT is the meaning of motivation
The observer must want to imitate the behaviour for something like a reward
What is the definition of modelling
When a role model enacts a behaviour that can be imitated by the observer
Ñame a number of factors that influence the likely hood Of imitating behaviour
Age, friends/peers, status, gender, admiration
What was banduras theory
His aim was to demonstrate that children could learn aggressive behaviour through obersvstion of a model.
What is vicarious reinforcement
When someone Is more likely to imitate the behaviour if there is a reward likewise we are less likely to imitate behaviour if there is a punishment
What were the findings of banduras experiment
When children where given there own doll, those who had seen aggression were more aggressive towards the doll, than children who had not seen aggression
What where the conclusions of banduras study
The boho doll study suggests that children are more likely to imitate ( models) acts of violence if they observed these in an adult role model
What was the procedure of banduras study
72 children aged 3-5 where put in separate rooms with an adult and various toys, one of the toys was a Bobo doll. Half of the children saw aggression from the adults and half didn’t. After the children were left alone for 20 minutes and observed.
Banduras PEE
P- his study provides support for key slt concepts such as imitation
E-72 children aged 3-5 where put in separate rooms with an adult and various toys, one of the toys was a Bobo doll. Half of the children saw aggression from the adults and half didn’t. After the children were left alone for 20 minutes and observed. When children where given there own doll, those who had seen aggression were more aggressive towards the doll, than children who had not seen aggression
E-this study supports imitation because children are more likely to imitate models acts of violence they observe it from an adult role model.
what is a strength of social learning theory
p- it has real world application
e- it can account for the behaviour of children and how they learn behaviour form the media and people, helps the understanding how children come to understand gender roles on tv and the media.
e- it increases the value of slt because it has world wide application
what is another strength of slt
p - emphasises importance of cognitive factors
e- neither operant or classical conditioning explain a comprehensive account of human learning because cognitive factors are omitted. humans and animal store information differently and process behaviour and make judegment before hand.
e- shows that slt provides a more complete explanation
counter for importance of cognitive factors
p- research suggests observational learning is controlled by mirror neurons in the brain. these let us emphasise with and imitate people
