cognitive approach Flashcards
what is the definition of cognitive approach
mental process should be studied by looking at perception and memory
what is the role of interference
cannot be directly observed , can study them indirectly by studying interference , making assumptions
what are the assumptions
- mind works like an computer , input which ir processes and produces an output
- thought process should be studied scientifically and controlled
what is a schema
a ‘mental framework’ beliefs and xpectations influence process
-developed through experinece
-baby born with simple motor skills eg sucking
- develop when we get older
what is a computer model
refers to programs that can be run by a computer to imitate human mind+ environmental stimuli
explain the computer model
stimlus response has the attention to short term memory then to long term memory. retrieval is from LTM to STM, but information is lost along the way
what is the theoretical models
information processing, info flows through a sequence of stages- the information processing model
what is the information processing model
input= from environment via senses, encoded individually
processing= once encoded can be processed, process schema
output= behaviorists response emitted following process
strength- real world application
e- applied to practical situations eg eye witness testimony , AI treatment of depression
e- supports value of the approach
limitation- machine reductionism
e- computer analogy criticism , motion and motivation influence accuracy, these factors are not considered
e-weakens validity of cognitive approach
strength- scientific methods
e- employed controlled and rigorous methods, lab studies , two fields of methods of cognitive and biological to enhance study
e- study of mind has scientific basis
what is a counterpoint of it being scientific
e- interference means cognitive can be abstract and theoretical
e- research lacks external validity , not everyday life
