Social learning theory Flashcards
Vicarious reinforcement
reinforcement that is not directly experienced but observed from someone else receiving reinforcement. The key to this is Imitation
Identification
When observer associates themselves to a role model and imitates their behaviour to be exactly like them. This is called modelling
How does someone become a role model
If they posses similar characteristics to you and/ or are attractive or high status
Mediational processes
Cognitive factor that influence our learning and come between stimulus and response. Bandura identified 4 mediational processes in learning
4 mediational processes
Attention
Retention
Motor reproduction
Motivation
Attention and retention
Attention- extent to which the behaviour is noticed
Retention- How well we can remember behaviour
Motor reproduction
The ability to perform the behaviour
Motivation
The will to perform the behaviour which is often determined by whether is behaviour is rewarded or punished.
Bandura research
Recorded young children who watched an adult behave aggressively to a bobo doll. When the children were later observed playing with the bobo doll they too behaved aggressively while those that had observed non-aggressive less likely to act aggressively
Bandura and Walters
Showed video to kids where the adult behaved aggressively towards Bobo doll.
Group 1- saw adult get praised for their behaviour
Group 2- Saw adult get punished for their aggressive behaviour
Group 3- control, saw aggressive behaviour but without any consequence
Group 1 most likely to act aggressive followed by Group 3 then least likely was Group 2
