humanistic approach Flashcards
Assumptions of this approach
Referred to as the persona centred approach and argues that human behaviour self determining and due to free will. We are active agents who make our own choices. Maslow and Rogers reject any scientific models in explaining human behaviour and rather prefers using subjective means over general laws

rogers
individual should have congruence between self and ideal self. If too much of a gap exist between the two selves the person is in a state of incongruence and self actualisation cannot be achieved.
what is client centred therapy
Developed by rogers and argues that many people today experience lack of self worth and low self esteem. This is due to lack of unconditional positive regard in childhood. Parents offer conditions of worth by saying ‘i will only love you if…’ but this stores up psychological problems for the child. Rogers argues that this can be countered by giving people unconditional positive regard to make up for what they lacked in childhood.
