Behaviourist approach Flashcards
Assumptions of Behaviourist approach
They argue that we have to try to maintain a high degree of control and objectivity. They relied heavily on lab exp. Behaviourists identified two important forms of learning:
-Classical conditioning
-Operant conditioning
Classical conditioning
Learning through association. Occurs when two stimuli are repeatedly paired together.
Pavlov’s research
Food (UCS) ——> Salivation (UCR)
Bell (NS)——> no response
Bell+food (NS+UCS)——-> Salivation (UCR)
Bell (CS)——->salivation (CR)
Operant conditioning
A form of learning in which behaviour is shaped and maintained by its consequences.
Skinner
learning is active process. There are 3 types of consequences of behaviour:
1)Positive reinforcement
2)Negative reinforcement
3)Punishment
Positive reinforcement
Being rewarded fro a certain behaviour
Negative Reinforcement
Avoid unpleasant behaviour
Punishment
Unpleasant consequence of a behaviour
Both negative and positive reinforcement make it……..
More likely that a behaviour will be repeated
Punishment…….
Decreases the likelihood that a behaviour will be repeated again
