The role of unconscious
Vast store of biological drives and instincts that can influence our behaviour and personality. It also consists of memories that have been repressed which were threatening and these can be acquired through parapraxes or slip of tongue or even dreams.
Preconscious
Consists of memories that are currently not consncious to us but can be accessible if desired
The structure of personality
Frued refers to the peronality as the tripartite personality. It consists of the:
Id
Ego
Superego
What is Id
works on the pleasure principle- gets what it wants.
Formed at birth
consists on biological drives and instincts
Selfish and demands for immediate gratification
What is the ego
works on the reality principle.
Developed at age 2
mediator between id and supergo
lessens conflict between the two
does this by employing defence mechanisms
Superego
Works on morality principle
developed at phallic stage
Internalised sense of right and wrong
represents moral standards from same sex parent
Punishes ego for wrongdoings
Defence mechanisms
strategies the ego uses to resolve the conflict between superego and id there are three:
Repression
Denial
Displacement
repression
forcing distressing memory out of the mind
Denial
refusing to acknowledge some aspects of reality
Displacement
transferring feelings from true source of distressing emotion to a substitute target

Oral
Anal
Phallic
Latency
Genital
oral stage and its unresolved conflict
0-1 yrs old
focus of pleasure is in the mouth
Unresolved conflict:
smoking
biting nails
Sarcastic
critical
Anal stage and its unresolved conflict
1-3 yrs old
Focus of pleasure is through the anus. child expresses pleasure withholding and expelling faeces
Unresolved conflict:
anal retentive- perfectionist, obsessive
anal repulsive- thoughtless, messi
Phallic stage and its unresolved conflict
3-5
focus of pleasure is the genital area
child experiences the Oedipus and Electra complex.
Unresolved conflict:
Phallic personality- narcissistic, reckless and possibly homosexual
Latency stage
earlier conflicts are repressed
