Origins of Psychology Flashcards
Introspection
A systematic methods used to study the mind by breaking it down into its constituent parts. (Thoughts, images and sensations. Referred to as structuralism)
Wundt’s role in psychology
He opened up the first ever psychology lab in Leipzig Germany 1879. He invented introspection to objectively study the conscious mind
Strengths- Objective
All introspection were recorded under controlled conditions using the same stimulus everytime (Metronome).
Strengths- Can be replicated
Used standardised instructions and therefore it means that the study can be repeated over many time. If the same results were obtained then the study is said to be reliable as we consistently get the same results.
Limitation- Subjective
Watson criticised introspection for being subjective. This is because the results vary from one person to the other so its difficult to establish general principles. Idiographic in a way
