Social Leaning Theory (Individualistic Learning Theory) Flashcards
What is the basic meaning of social learning theory?
A theory that suggests how nurture influences peoples behaviour
How does Albert Bandura suggest we learn behaviour like criminality?
Through observing our role models, such as teachers or parents and imitating their behaviour
What is modelling?
Where we imitate our role models behaviour
Why does he say we imitate behaviour?
Because we want the same reward as our models
Who did he say we are most likely to imitate behaviour from?
Same gender, similar age, have a higher status(role models) , if we see someone being rewarded for the behaviour
What is vicarious reinforcement?
Imitating behaviour we see being rewarded by somebody so we receive the same reward
How did Bandura carry out his research?
Used Bobo dolls, where a group of children(3-6yrs) watched adults either aggressively with the doll or acting non-aggressively. The children were then left in a room with the doll, kids observing the aggressive adult imitated their behaviour and kids with non-aggressive adult demonstrated much less aggression
Who were the boys in the research most likely to imitate?
Male models
How does the research link to crime?
Aggressive behaviour can be learnt, people who see aggressive behaviour around them are very likely to imitate the same behaviour. Also, if someone sees a model being rewarded for a crime then they will likely imitate them
