Social influence: social support Flashcards
What is social support?
It is when others provide validation, encouragement, or different opinions that help someone resist social pressure to conform or obey.
Why does social support make it easier to resist?
Because it reduces the feeling of pressure and boosts confidence.
How can resistance to conformity occur?
The presence of a disagreeing confederate
What did Albrecht et al do (Real world support)
8 week programme to help pregnant adolescents resist the pressure to smoke.
What is the social support in Albrecht et al’s work?
The pregnant adolescents had a mentor/buddy that help adolescents resist social influence
What are the findings of Albrecht el al in relation to the presence of the buddy?
Those who has a buddy were significantly less likely to smoke in comparison to control group who didn’t have a ‘buddy’
What is Gammon et al’s work about (Real world support)
Participants in a group were asked to produce evidence to help an oil company run a smear campaign.
What were the findings of Gammon et al?
Participants were in a group and could therefore discuss what to do. There is a higher level of resistance than Milgram’s study.
In Gammon et al’s work, how many participants rebelled against their orders?
88%
What did Holland do? (Real world support)
Repeated Milgram’s baseline experiment and recorded whether the participant has an internal or external locus of control.
In Holland’s work, what percentage with internal loc did not continue to highest shock level?
37%
In Holland’s work, what percentage with external loc did not continue to highest shock level?
23%
Conclusion of Holland’s work
Resistance can be partly down to locus of control
What did Twenge et al do? (Contradictory research)
They conducted a meta-analysis.
An analysis data from American locus of control studies over 48 years.
Findings of Twenge et al’s work
There is more resistance to obedience and more people shifted their locus of control to an external.
Conclusion of twenge et al’s work
With the results more people should have had an internal loc meaning that the role of loc can be limited when referring to resistance to social influence.
According to Rotter, LOC only affects behaviour in ______?
LOC only affects behaviour in new situations.
Obey in the past -> probably going to obey again in the future
In resistance to conformity (Milgram’s study’), what did the confederate act as?
A model of disobedient behaviour
In resisting to conformity (Milgram’s study), what was the participant able to do?
Was able to act in a more natural way and disobey orders.
In milgram’s study, when a disobedient confederate entered, the obedience rate dropped from ____ to ______
Obedience rate dropped from 65% to 10%
