Social Influence: Resistance to social influence Flashcards
Outline Resistance to social influence
- Social Support
- Locus Of Control
Define Social Support
The presence of people who resist pressures to conform or obey can help others to do the same. These people act as models to show others that resistance to social influence is possible
Outline Social support in conformity
Social support can help to resist conformity
Asch study showed the person resisting conformity doesn’t have to be correct, just different. This gives others the confidence to be non-conformist
Outline social support in obedience
Milgram’s obedience rates dropped from 65% to 10% when there was a disobedient confederate
Define Locus of Control
Refers to the sense we each have about what directs events in our lives.
Internals believe they’re mostly responsible for what happens to them
Externals believe it is mainly a matter of luck or other external forces
What does the continuum of LOC look like
High internal / \ Low internal Low external / \ High external
People who have a High internal LOC are..
likely to resist pressures to conform or obey
Take responsibility for their own actions
Base decisions on own beliefs
More self confidence
Less need for social approval
People who have High external LOC are…
Likely to obey and conform
Evaluation of Social Support
+ Research support Conformity - Asch
+ Research support Obedience - Milgram
Evaluation of Locus Of Control
+ Research support (Holland)
+ Contradictory research (Twenge)
What did Holland do
Repeated Milgrams study
measured if pps where externals or internals
37% internals didn’t continue to highest level
23% externals didn’t continue to highest level
Internals showed greater resistance to authority
What did Twenge do
Analysed 40 obedience studies
found people have become more resistant to obedience
But have become more external
Opposite of what we expect
