Memory: Multi-Store model of memory Flashcards
The multi-store model of memory =
A representation of memory works. Shows how memory transfers from one store to another, how it is remembered and how it is forgotten
Outline the multi-store model of memory:
- Stimulus
- Sensory register
- STM
- LTM
Outline the multi-store model of memory:
Sensory register
contains one store for each of 5 senses
high capacity
low duration
only passes info onto STM if payed attention
Outline the multi-store model of memory:
Maintenance rehearsal
Keep information in STM by maintenance rehearsal. If we do this long enough it turns into prolonged rehearsal and enters our LTM
Outline the multi-store model of memory:
Retrieval
Info in LTM that we want to recall is brought back to STM by retrieval
Evaluation of Multi-store model of Memory
+ Shows how memory works
+ Support from Baddeley
- Doesn’t consider different types of short term memory
- Doesn’t consider different types of long term memory
- Doesn’t consider elaborative rehearsal
- Uses artificial material (low external validity)
