Social Influence – Group Influences Flashcards
Social Facilitation
Social facilitation refers to the phenomenon where the presence of others improves an individual’s performance on easy or well-learned tasks but may impair performance on difficult or unfamiliar tasks.
Social Loafing
Social loafing occurs when individuals in a group exert less effort on a task compared to when they work alone, often due to diffusion of responsibility and decreased evaluation apprehension.
Deindividuation
Deindividuation refers to the loss of individual identity and inhibition when individuals are part of a large group or are anonymous, which may lead to deviant behavior or reduced self-awareness.
Minority Influence
Minority influence occurs when an individual with a minority opinion persuades the majority to adopt their viewpoint, often relying on consistent expression of their opinion and leading to private acceptance of the minority opinion.
Group Development
Tuckman and Jensen’s model of group development describes five stages: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning, which groups typically go through as they form, mature, and accomplish tasks.
