Affiliation, Attraction, and Intimacy Flashcards
Need for Affiliation
The need for affiliation is the desire to establish and maintain rewarding interpersonal relationships. It is often considered to have an innate component and may be influenced by factors such as social comparison.
Mere Exposure Effect
The mere exposure effect refers to the tendency for people to develop a preference for things they are exposed to repeatedly. This phenomenon applies to initial neutral or positive responses but not extreme negativity.
Interpersonal Attraction
Interpersonal attraction is influenced by factors such as similarity, fallibility, reciprocity, and the mere exposure effect. These factors contribute to the development of relationships and the likelihood of individuals being attracted to one another.
Emotion Elicitation in Relationships
Berscheid’s emotion-in-relationships model suggests that strong emotions are elicited in close relationships when partners disrupt routine behaviors with unexpected actions. Positive or negative emotions result from the outcomes of these interruptions.
Sexual Jealousy
Sexual jealousy involves emotional reactions to perceived threats of infidelity. Buss et al. found that men tend to react more strongly to sexual infidelity, while women react more strongly to emotional infidelity, which may be influenced by evolutionary factors and gender differences in reproductive goals.
