social influence Flashcards
What is the name of the psychologist known for his research on comformity?
Asch
What is a confederate?
A research actor who secretly participates along with actual participants
What 3 variables did Asch investigate in relation to conformity?
-Group size
-Task difficulty
-Unanimity
What percentage of people conformed in Asch’s original experiment?
37%
What are the 3 types of conformity ?
-Internalisation
-Compliance
-Identification
What is the explanation for the type of conformity Internalisation
informational social influence (ISI)
During an uncertain situation we want to be right so we look to the group for answers
cognitive process( the need to be right)
What is the explanation for the type of conformity Compliance?
Normative social influence(NSI)
Gaining social approval by following the social ‘norms’
Conforming to fit in and gain approval or avoid disapproval from others
emotional process( the need to be liked)
What is the explanation for the type of conformity Identification?
Conforming for information & social norms
What is conformity?
A change in a person’s behaviour and opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
State one strength of NSI
(normative social influence)
Asch’s research supports NSI as ppts stated they were afraid of disapproval from the group- Conformity rates fell to 12.5% when they could write answers rather than read them aloud.
Shows conformity is due to a desire to not be rejected/ judged by the group
State one strength to support ISI
(informational social influence)
Evidence: Lucas et al (2006)
When showed difficult maths problems there was a higher conformity rate as participants looked to others for guidance/ answers
What is internalisation
Private and public acceptance of group norms
What is identification
Change behaviour to be part of a group we identify with, may change privately too
Explain the procedure of the Zimbardos SPE
-21 male students were randomly assigned prisoner and prison gaurd
-every ppt was assessed before to ensure no one had any psychological problems
-ppts were given uniforms according to their roles
What were the baseline findings of Milgrams research?
-Every ppt delivered shocks upto 300
-65% of ppts gave shocks at 450 volts
