Research methods Flashcards
What is the meant by the ‘aim’ of an investigation?
A general statement of what the researcher intends to investigate- the purpose of the study
What is meant by the ‘hypothesis’ of a study?
A statement made stating the relationship between variables and predicting the outcome of the investigation
What is an extraneous variable?
Name two examples
Any variable other than the IV that may affect the DV if it is not controlled.
e.g lighting , gender
What is a confounding variable?
A variable that is related to the IV/ varys systematically with the IV
What are Demand Characteristics?
Cues or Clues given by the investigator that may help a participant figure out the aim of the study
What are 2 ways in which the ppts could respond when finding out the aim of the study?
The ‘screw-U-effect’- ppts deliberately underperform to sabotage results
The ‘please-U-effect’- ppts act in a way they think is expected to please the experimenter
What are the 4 types of consent?
-informed consent
-presumptive consent
-prior general consent
-retrospective consent
What are the 4 ethical issues?

What is a pilot study?
A small scale experiment done before the actual experiment
What are the 5 different types of sampling?
-stratified
-systematic
-random
-volunteer
-opportunity
