What is social influence?
The change in behaviour that one person causes in another, intentionally or unintentionally
What is conformity?
Yielding to group pressure
What is obedience?
Following orders from someone we perceive as having more authority than us
What is crowd behaviour?
Refers to a group of people who have come together for a common purpose. People lose their identity when in a crowd and may go along with antisocial behaviour
What is collective behaviour?
The behaviour of two or more individuals who are acting together. Suggests that a person has lost their sense of personal control and now part of a greater power that influences people within the collective
What is antisocial behaviour?
Actions which go against society and harms it in some way
What is prosocial behaviour?
Actions which benefit society
What are situational factors?
An external influence which can inpact a young person’s life
What is normative conformity?
Fact that people sometimes change their behaviour, thoughts, or values to be liked and accepted by others
What is informational conformity?
People conform because they want to be perceived as correct and so follow the lead of others
What is a confederate?
A person who works for someone
What is group norm?
Specific ideas or assumptions held by a particular group about what is considered acceptable behaviour within that group
What is deindividuation?
A psychological state in which an individual loses their personal identity and takes on the group identity of the people around them
What is a collectivist society?
Emphasizes the needs and goals of the group as a whole over the needs and wishes of each individual
What is an individualistic society?
A society which is characterised by individualism, which is the prioritising, or emphasis, of the individual over the entire group
What is legitimate authority?
Degree to which individuals are seen as justified in having power over others
What is an agentic state?
When an individual does not feel responsible for their actions as they are acting under the orders from an authority figure
What is an autonomous state?
Person sees themselves as responsible
What is morality?
Understanding what is right and wrong in how we think and behave. It includes being honest, truthful and responsible for your own actions
What is an authoritarian personality?
A personality type that is very obedient to authority
What is dispositional?
How our own personality can affect whether or not we will obey or conform
What is deindividuation?
When people are in a crowd and they lose their sense of individuality and feel more anonymous
What is locus of control?
How much control a person feels they have over their own life, with reference to external and internal factors
What is minority influence?
The idea that small groups of people can change the opinion and beliefs of larger groups of people
