What is a healthy brain?
A brain that functions normally
What is slow wave sleep?
A type of deep sleep where brain activity is slow
What is REM sleep?
A stage at the end of the sleep cycle where sleepers eyes jerk and brain activity is high, leading to more dreaming in this stage than others
What is NREM sleep?
The phase of sleep that is considered the quiet or restful phase. 1-3 stages
What is the pineal gland?
An endocrine gland, found in the brain, which produces melatonin
What is melatonin?
A hormone released in the brain that is responsible for regulating sleep
What are exogenous zeitgebers?
Features of the environment that helps to manage bodily rhythms
What are endogenous pacemakers?
Internal biological clocks that manage bodily rhythms
What is sleep onset insomnia?
Problems falling asleep
What is sleep maintenance insomnia?
Problems staying asleep
What is repression?
The process of pushing unpleasant thoughts and experiences into the unconscious mind
What is manifest content?
What is actually experienced in a dream in terms of visual, auditory and other information
What is latent content?
The true meaning of a dream that is hidden in the manifest content
What is psychoanalysis?
A type of therapy that attempts to resolve psychological problems by accessing unconscious and unresolved conflicts
What is the activation synthesis theory?
An explanation of dreams that focuses on the random activation of neurons and the brains efforts to make sense of this through synthesis

Strategies that support a good nights sleep

A division of the nervous system that controls the flight or fight response when faced with stress
What is the parasympathetic nervous system?
A division of the nervous system that regulates organ and gland functions during rest, and counters the response of the sympathetic nervous system
