What is internalisation? (type of conformity)

A

conforming to the behaviours/opinions of others BOTH publicly and privately. This occurs when attitudes become part of a person’s OWN BELIEF SYSTEM. Attitudes and behaviour persists even in the absence of the group. deepest level of conformity

What is compliance? (type of conformity)

A

going along with others in PUBLIC situations, but PRIVATELY DISAGREEING. Only a superficial change in behaviour and once the pressure stops, so does that particular behaviour/opinion. shallow form of conformity

What is identification? (type of conformity)

A

conforming to the opinions/beliefs of a group because there is something that we LIKE/ADMIRE about the group WHEN WITH THEM. Publicly change our behaviour, this is TEMPORARY as beliefs are not maintained when you leave the group.

What is normative social influence NSI? (explanation for conformity)

A

we conform as we desire to be LIKED. We conform because we think that others will APPROVE & ACCEPT us. this usually leads to COMPLIANCE.
- usually an emotional response, can occur in stressful situations.

A

based on our DESIRE TO BE RIGHT. We look to OTHERS who we believe to be CORRECT, and to give us information about how to behave, particularly in new or ambiguous situations.
