what were the impacts of global structure of colonialism

A

This involves colonial structures developing a military control of non European territories for exploitation

The impact
Was globally distributed inequalities, by traveling to different continents their exploitationary plans led to racism in equality throughout the world

They hada huge impact on the life outcomes of Indigenous lives in Canada, through forcing their own ideals through residential schools, stealing lands, cultural genocide of the Indigenous people.

Q

What was the dominant ideology that justified colonialism

A

The ideas that theses people were barbaric, uncivilized and lacked emotional capacity, intelligent laws, government or ways of living. So therefore they need to be managed

Secondly, that these cultures untouched, rich and still in their primitive like endangered animals in a zoo need to be maintained and remain untouched, leave them in their fundamentally nature existence without European politics

Although these concepts lead to dehumanization of the colonized but their approach to justification differs from that of the black slavery justification

Q

What did Franz Fanon regards as the justification for the dominant structure of colonialism

A

He emphasized the two elements that both dehumanized the colonized differently
One being the construction of the subjects as uncivilized and babaric
The second the construction of colonial subjects as pre cultural, untouched by European politcs. Frank said this was like a form of jealousy from the Europeansof how they still existed in their original, simple natural practices

Q

How does scientific racism differ from institutional racism

A

Scientific racism is the cultural narrative that justified racism.so although the structure through emancipation, suffrage, and education were structures that all caused significant changes to slavery but despite that due to racial wage and other cultural narrartive still in place, racism was still maintained

While ion institutional racism although there might be an absence of prejudicial attitudes about race race based inequality is still being reproduced because of the institutions , structures and rules in place

Q

What did du Bois mean by black Americans experience double consciousness and how does this relates to Meads concept of the generalize other

A

Black Americans experience 2 levels of consciousness
The first being one’s self and one’s own self understanding, that is who you are as a person, your own understanding of self and who you believe you are as a person

While the other consciousness is that of how one is perceived, either by being white or the other dominant white culture. Similar to the generalized other, how you think the other white see or perceive who you are

According to du Bois, when you are a raciaized person, your reaction to situations is not how you as your first consciousness would normally act but what how you think you should be expected to act, in such a way that the white are would see you or consider you as normal

So for example in Du Bois’s case, while researching his PHD at Harvard, there were very few people commenting on what his work was, the influence his work and his methodologies, it was more on the fact that he was black. So his first consciousness of self was rarely brought out or the topic of discussion it only revolved around his second consciousness of being a black student at Harvard studying a phd not just being a student at Harvard

So in essence a racialized person is always confronting with how they are perceived by the dominant culture and how they should be regarded or act to conform to the ideals of the generalized other, so as not to get judged

Q

What is the meaning of veil that du Bois mentions in souls of black folk

A

When you are not white, the racial categorization obscures the ability of others to view you as a person, because you are into seen as a certain racial category. So to escape the fact that you are anything more than your colour is almost impossible

Q

Black American are born with a veil and gifted with second sight in this American world- a world which yields him no true self consciences, but only lets him see through the revelation of the other world this statement by Dubois means what?

A

Blacks have no true self ciunsicuncess
Because who they are seen as is not who they are but by the racial characterization of being black
And so they can only see themselves as being black, because they believed the generalized other only sees them as being black and therefore they can only be seen as black and not their true counsciounsess

For example, Barack Obama being seems as the 1st African American presidents, yes it is a notable thing in history to be known but why does it always have to be said. His individuality and person as a man, husband and father is often not talked about as compared to being referred to as the 1st black American president. Blackness over individuality

In opposition to Justin Trudeau, no one would refers to him as the 44th White Canadian Prime Minister, whiteness almost lends a door to invincibility, such that by virtue of being white does not lead to any conception or need to be pointed out. He is just a man who is the prime minister, his racial category is not subjected or regarded as something that needs to be pointed out

Who quoted that inequality that exist “from the bottom to the top” and what does it mean

A

Gayatri Spivak a post colonial feminist theorist

Meant that regardless of where you are in the groups of multi million dollar, extremely rich people who have every access to anything they desire there is still inequality of womenn
Even though we go to the poorest of the poor, there is still inequality there as well

Sex is the biological categorization of being male or female, that is through chromosomes, gonads, genetic and secondary characteristics of what it is to be female, male or intersex

Gender is the social categorization of what it means to be female or male. The social expectations culturally imbedded by structure to act and behave in what it is to be male or female. Examples men wear pants and female wear skirts

Gender identity is a persons own personal thought of what they consider them self to be, their own sense of belonging to a particular gender, man woman, transgender, non binary

Even though both parents generally work in a family now but the unpaid labour of cleaning, cooking, child care is generally attributed to the women

A

Longitudinal study
Quantitative research operationalized into a survey question answered by the children
Operationalized into a form of likert test
Representative sample

24
Q

Was the study of heterosexual families in Australia a study high in reliability or validity
Also was it representaive?

A

It was valid but the reliability may only be applied to Australian public
It may not be generalizable to the other public outside Australia
Also it was only generalized to specifically heterosexual homes not homosexual or single parents families

25
Q

What was the dependent and Independent variable in the study of inter generational transmission of gender

A

Dependent- the gender role attitude of each parent operationalized into a 3 question survey, to ascertain the children egalitarian or non egalitarian views

Independent variable how did parents parenting style , time spent during childcare and time spent doing unpaid house work for each parent independently

26
Q

What were the overall results of the gender roles study
How did it differ between the father

A

Father- the more time the father spent on unpaid labour at home more egalitarian view from child
More time father spent on childcare led to more egalitarian views
The one that had no effect was the fathers parenting style, warm or cold did not affect child understanding of gender roles

A

The fathers explicit teachings about egalitarian views did not impact how the children developed their gender attitudes.
So regardless of if they were teaching and talking to them constantly about it had no effect in their ability to develop egalitarian views

But, by the father spending more time on unpaid labour, the actions of the child, the attitude and behaviors of the child that encouraged more egalitarian views.

The more time the mother spent on doing unpaid labour the higher the chance of developing a non egalitarian views by kids

Mothers parenting style of warm or cold, warmer mothers developed more egalitarian views in kids and more authoritative mothers developed less egalitarian views in children

32
Q

What is the relationship of intersexuality to understanding inequalities as it is affected by different independent variables of class, race, ethnicity, nationality

A

The social categories associated with a form of disadvantage or inequality like race and gender never occur in isolation, they are always related to one another
When it is being studied it should be thought of as being a co-experience
Why ? Because, no one is just black, or just white, or just a woman, every individuals experiences life with these all connected together and to understand one, you also need to understand the other

33
Q

Give some examples of intersectionality illustrated the notes

A

Experience of being a black man and facing police brutality, is more likely than being a black woman

Daycare workers which are women who earn less are usually more racialized women that work in that field than white women

White Women fighting for equality and the need to become doctors and lawyers, not just staying home and taking care of the kids, but black women stating that they already are in the workforce by waking up and going to work in the white women’s homes for household chores and taking care of their kids

34

A

Inequality occurs as a result of intersection not just independently of our variable or the other, they all have a relationship in affecting an individual

To understand any form of inequality, you also need to pay attention to the intersection of these other roles

36
Q

What type of racism manifests between Canada and the Indigenous people and how does it matter

A

Cultural racism
The indigenous people were not unequally treated because of how they looked, their biology or physical attributes were not subjected to criticism it was their ways
Their duet, behavior, customs, way of living, dressing, language that was seen as inferior by the European colonizers, which they felt needed to be changed that led to the enactment of residential schools
