Park and Rothbart (1982) - natural experiment
A
- to see if natural occurring social groups would demonstrate in-group bias and the out-group homogeneity effect
- 90 participants belonging to three sororities at a university were asked to rank their sorority and the out group sororities out of 10 characteristics (8 favorable and 2 unfavorable)
- all groups said the favorable characteristics were more typical of their own sorority than other sororities. two of the other sororities ranked the unfavorable characteristics as more characteristic of other sororities
- belonging to an in group leads a to an in group bias and out group homogeneity. this increases the likelihood of forming a stereotype
