social cognitive theory Flashcards
1
Q
socialization
A
the process by which a child learns the norms of living in their group
2
Q
observational learning
A
- attention: noticing and paying attention to the model (someone with authority, closeness and engaging)
- retention: remembering the behavior
- reproduction: being able to reproduce the behavior (self efficacy: belief in ones ability to acomplish a task)
- motivation: desire to imitate the behavior (outcome experiences: reward/punishment through direct or vicarious experiences)

Q
Bandura et al (1961) - true experiment
A
- to investigate the effect of children’s exposure to aggressive behavior
- boys and girls aged 2-5 were placed in three conditions: aggressive (kids observed an adult model acting aggressively to a bobo doll). non aggressive (Adult model playing with other toys and ignoring the doll), control (kids did not observe the model)- Some kids watched a model of the same gender, others of a different gender. Then they were put in a room with the doll and other toys and observed
- kids in the aggressive condition had higher rates of aggressive behavior. Boys who observed a male model were more likely to imitate the behavior, girls showed more physical aggression of the model was male, verbal if female
- behavior can be learned by observing others. identifying with the model could increase the likely hood of a behavior of being learned
