fagot (1958) - interviews
- to observe parental reactions to behavior that wasn’t deemed appropriate for the child’s gender
- 24 families, half with a son and half with a daughter were observed in their homes for 5 weeks. The behaviors observed were categorized into 46 separate child behaviors and 19 separate parental reactions ranging from positive to negative
- gender specific behaviors were given a higher approval from parents than gender inappropriate behavior. the researchers note that parents did not seem toe aware that they were perpetuating gender stereotypes
- the process of enculturation in terms of reinforcing gender roles and behavior may be entrenched in the culture
weck and wilson (2010) interviews
- to investigate the factors that can affect acculturative stress in asian immigrants to america
- asian americans,s half born over their and the other half first generation immigrants were interviewed about their acculturation experience. the interviews had a similar context and language as the participants
- around 70% reported aculturative stress factors that contributed to lower stress were bilingüismo, sharing values with their family and economic satisfaction. t higher aculturative stress was related to a preference of only english, experiences of discrimination. acculturative stress is common in all individuals
- assimilation seems to contribute to it, while integration reduces it,as it helps them maintain ties to their culture while being able to integrate
