Social Evolution Flashcards
Why should individuals live in groups (6)
- clustering if appropriate habitat
- patchy resources
- mating aggregation
- protection from predators (safety in numbers)
- protection from predators(selfish herd)
- sharing info
4 types of behaviour
- cooperation (makes sense)
- selfish (makes sense)
- altruistic (makes less sense)
- spite (makes no sense)
Social altruism explained by kin selection
Total fitness = direct fitness + inclusive fitness
Direct fitness
Individual reproductive success
Inclusive fitness
Reproductive success of genetic relatives facilitated by an individuals actions
Hamilton’s rule
Explains altruism Br-C>0 B=benefit to recipient r=relatedness C=cost actor
Calculating relatedness
Find how probable recipient gets a same allele as actor
1/2 multiplied by how many separations there are, if there are multiple arrow links from the actor add them together
What is needed for spite
Relation less than zero, possible when it’s done in comparison to r of average individual
Fitness adv of spite in bacteria
Explodes itself which improves overall fitness of its species cause it kills less related one
