Social Class PARA 2 entertainment Flashcards
Item point:
‘As a social problem, poverty is often presented for entertainment’
Sociological theory
MCKENDRICK–>studies concluded that coverage of poverty is marginal in the UK media and the truth about poverty is rarely explored in the media
Example: The media often represent the working class stereotypical context such as soaps like Eastenders and Coronation street. British soaps show close knit working class communities but in reality, these communities have collapsed (false class conciousness)
Evaluation:
MARXISTS: would argue that the content of media is a way of distracting the working class audience for the inadequacies of capitalism, if by showing the working class representations of poverty as ‘entertainment’ this will create a false-class consciousness as their way of living will become reality TV rather than real life
LAWLER: argues that the media purposely stigmatises the working class as ‘white trash’ images wearing tracksuits and taking part in antisocial behaviour (moral panic: Hall black muggers) one Contemporary example of this is Little Britain.
