Gender PARA 3 'New man representation' Flashcards
Item point:
‘Gender stereotypes are changing’
Sociological evidence
POINT: GAUNLETT argued that the ‘new man’ emerged in media representation in the early 80s, however others suggest that there has been an increase in retributive masculinity
Contemporary Example: Magazines such as GQ, aimed at middle class men, showed men getting in touch with their feminine side, Gaunlett argues that these magazines are often centred on ‘helping men to be considerate lovers, useful around the home, healthy and fashionable. The introduction of the Metro sexual male is argued to reflect changes in social attitudes to masculinity.
Evaluation:
Point: there are signs that the media is moving away from the emphasis of traditional masculinity, to embrace new forms of masculinity that celebrate fatherhood and emotional vulnerability.
However it is important not to exaggerate changes in representation of masculinity as the overall tone of the media representation will still strongly support hegemonic versions of what is to be a man. For example men’s lifestyle magazine.
