Ethnicity PARA 3 Islamophobia Flashcards
Point
Van Dijk also argued that a common news stereotype was the idea that minority ethnic groups are posing a threat to the majority white culture
Sociological theory
VAN DJIK found that moral panics have been constructed around immigrants (seen as threat and job stealing)
Refugees and asylum seekers: who are often portrayed as coming to Britain to abuse the welfare state
Muslims: are often portrayed as the enemy within
EXAMPLE: MOORE ET AL found that between 2000-2008 1/3 of stories focused on terrorism while 1/3 of stories focused on differences between Muslim community and British society by highlighting forced marriages. In contrast: stories about attacks on Muslims and Islamophobia were fairly rare.
Evaluation
The growth of new media has enabled more Ethnic minority views to be heard such as those seen through the BLM protest following the George Floyd movement. The new media has been used to call out everyday racist incidents therefore drawing light to incidents such as Islamophobia.
EXAMPLE: For example there is now an ISLAMOPHOBIA AWARENESS MONTH which has been in place since 2012 which aims to showcase positive contributions of Muslims as well as raise awareness of Islamophobia in society.
