Conflict theories such as Marxists would argue that the media uses negative representations of ethnic minorities to divide the working class and to distract them from inequality and the mismanagement of the capitalist system.

Pluralists would disagree and state that the media is just reflecting the fears and ideologies of society, journalists are seen as watchdogs of the public interest therefore will only publish news which is deemed important and relevant to the audience, the sole reason for this is to give the audience what they want to read about.
