POSTMODERNISTS= more choice than ever, globalisation has provided global population with more choices about lifestyle choices bringing with it opportunities for new identities and to learn more about other cultures.

  • No longer limited to the amount of TV and Radio programmes they can listen to. Now there are thousands of channels and multiple different online streaming channels–> consumers can pick and choose what they’d like to interact with: therefore people are less likely to follow rigid ideology resulting in more diverse and inclusive media.

Contemporary example= BBC RADIO ASIAN–> features music and speech likely to appeal to those of an interest in the British Asian lifestyle. Feel recognised and included and give them a platform they can discuss realistic problems they come across in their everyday life
- Can also allow those who are not Asian to learn and immerse themselves within their culture, allowing audiences to be educated from those who are a part of a minority rather than white, rich men.

A

SOCIOLOGIST: SHAH argues that broadcasters overcompensate for the lack of executive, producers, directors from minority ethnic groups by putting too many black and Asian faces on the screen, regardless of whether they authentically fit programmes they are in.

Ethnic minority actors are merely props
