Social Causation Hypothesis Flashcards
What are the 4 social factors that are thought to contribute to schizophrenia
Social adversity
Urbanicity
Social isolation
Immigration and minority status
What does social adversity mean in SCH
Poorer living standards such as unemployment or poverty, socioeconomic status may also prevent access to treatment
What does urbanicity mean SCH
That people in city’s and more urban settings are more likely to be more stressed, micron factors such as noise, crime, light pollution and a faster pace of life.
What does social isolation mean in SCH
When people have sz that means they may withdraw from society and this means that the symptoms may become worse when not talking to others
What does immigration and minority status mean in SCH
Second generation immigrants are at a higher risk of sz due to their possible outgroup status, weaker cultural identity and exposure to prejudice and discrimination
What did freeman (1994) find? Supported by William Eaton (1974)
There was an above average incidence of sz in Stockholm, Chicago, London and Nottingham. William Eaton suggested that this was because the stressful life that is not found in rural areas, can cause a sz episode
