bio treatment for SZ Flashcards
what is the Bio treatment for SZ
Drug treatment - focussing on Neurotransmitters in the brain, uses antipsychotics.
example of FGA
Chlorpromazine
what do FGA’s do?
block the receptors in synapses that absorb dopamine so they effectively reduce the action of dopamine
example of an SGA
Clozapine
what do SGA’s do?
they also affect the absorption of dopamine in the D2 receptors but also affect the absorption of serotonin too in the 5-HT
is drug treatment effective?
they are effective as they do reduce the symptoms of SZ, but they can be controversial as they have many side effects which can mean that people decide to come off them, these are reduced in SGA’s though
what is a side effect of an FGA?
tardive dyskinesia, which is uncontrollable facial grimaces and tics, this effects 25% of people who take FGA’s for more than 7 years and cannot be reversed
what is a side effect of an SGA?
Agranulocytosis, 2% develop this. It is a potential fatal blood disorder
