reliability and validity of diagnosis Flashcards
Inter-rater reliability: what is it
do two different researchers give the same diagnosis.
Test-retest reliability: what is it
does the same researcher give the same diagnosis twice at different times.
Descriptive validity: what is it
do people with the same diagnosis have the same symptoms
Predictive validity: what is it
is the outcome and symptoms of the diagnosis as expected after they are diagnosed
concurrent validity: what is it
is the diagnosis the same when compared to a different diagnostic tool
Inter rater reliability: a study to support
Goldstein (1988) - researchers reviewed the symptoms of people with SZ and they found a high level of agreement in the re-diagnosis
Test retest reliability: a study to support
Stinchfield (2003) - used the DSM to diagnose people with gambling addiction and people without it and found that it was accurate in predicting wether or not they had it.
Descriptive validity: a study to dispute
Rosenhan - put pseudo patients into a psychiatric hospital to see if the nurses would realise if they were sane or not as they stopped showing symptoms of SZ after they were admitted and they couldn’t
Predictive validity: study to support
Kim cohen - found that children who had a conduct disorder at age 5 would have a behavioural issue or eduction issue at age 7
Concurrent validity: a study to support
Andrews et al - people diagnosed with depression and anxiety were diagnosed the same with the DSM 4 and ICD 10
