Seashore economy, shipping, fishing, whaling, shipbuilding, naval supplies and trading. Some logging and trapping in vast forests.

Lived in seaport towns, small strong homes (widows perch), some cattle, sheep and pigs raised with small family gardens for vegetables. Some hunting and trapping.
New England Relgion
Deeply religious people (many Puritans). Religion played a large role in everyday life. God was just and feared and they did not approve of “lighthearted things or behavior”
Punshment New England
Very strict and severe, stocks were used commonly. Whipping posts and dunking stools were also used- all in public!
Education New England
Reading was very important for all to learn (bible). NE becomes the leader in education in America (like Syo!). 1647 MA Colony passes law that all towns must provide schooling. 1636, Harvard College started in MA.

farming is main industry, known as the “Bread Colonies”, wheats and grains, some industry (rope making, iron mills and nautical supplies), shipping, fishing and whaling. Trapping and hunting.
Home Life Middle Colonies
Small homes and towns (easy to heat), some large estates, many scotch Irish, French and Dutch settle here. New York City (formerly New Amsterdam) becomes a major trade and financial area.
Middle colonies religion
The middle colonies are called the “melting pot” of religions. Many different religions welcomed; Quakers, Protestants, Catholics, Jewish etc…
Middle Colonies movements
The anti slavery movement (later called the abolitionists mvmnt) started here.
Mddle Colonies education
fewer schools and colleges than in NE. 1750, The College of NJ (Princeton) started. King’s College also started (Columbia) 1754 in NYC
Southern Colonie Geography
The southern colonies were very warm and enjoyed long growing seasons –Soil was fertile and rich with nutrients with large tracts of flat land perfect for agriculture –HAZY-HOT-HUMID
Sothern Colonies economy
farming farming farming. Large self sufficient plantations growing mainly one crop. –Small family farms with crops and livestock
Southern Colonies Home Life
Three to four major crops were primarily grown; cotton, indigo, tobacco and rice. (cash crops). Most sold to industrialized England. Cotton and tobacco were the most profitable. –Large plantation homes with wealthy landowners and facilities for workers and slaves.
