Soc 26 - Socio-cultural Influences On Sport Flashcards
How does gender affect who plays sport?
The stereotypes or sports belonging to certain genders has mainly disappeared, although some activities still offer more to one gender than another.
A boy who loves netball may struggle to find a boys team and competition, more than a women might.
Most sports still play genders seperately, like in athletics.
Overall a greater proportion of men play sport (40.7% of men, 31.2% of women).
Aswell as this women may have more responsabilities, for example looking after a new born baby as they can provide breast milk.
How does age affect taking part in sport?
Age can affect participation in sport and also phsyical activities, most sport is good to start young, but some competitive events may have age restrictions.
E.g minimum age to particpate in the london marathon is 18, but under-11’s can do Parkrun if accompanied by an adult.
Work and family responsibilities can grow as you get older, and this prevents them participating in physical activity.
Some sports are better for certain ages, e.g golf and bowls suits older people better, where less strength and cardiovascular fitness is available.
Socio-Economic groups affect who plays sport because…..
People who are more well of can be able to afford better facilaties, coaching, equipment and clothing. A sport like running will be much cheaper to do than a sport like football where all the equipment and membership is needed.
It can also affect the type of sport that you get involved in; polo, rowing and lacrosse is traditionally ‘wealthy’ sports.
How does ethnicity affect who played sport?
It can influence if you play sport, what sports you play and succeed in as well as influencing peoples attitudes to sport.
There’s been instances of racist abuse against non-white players, for example in football and this might turn people against sport.
How does disability affect who takes part in sport?
Recources and opportunities for people who are disabled are increasing, but they still can be limited, through accesibility for example. More sport is still needed for people who play disabled sports on a local level.
Influence of other people affects you because….
Children will often take part in the same physical activities as their parents and support the same teams. But family responsibilities may prevent parents for particitpating in physical activity.
Influence of your peer group (and people of the same age, status and interests as you) is important. Its easier to succeed with your friends encouragement.
Successful sports people may become role models, and inspire others to take up sport. Being a role model has responsibilities e.g not taking drugs, displaying sportsmanship.
How was Andy Murray influenced?
Mum was a tennis coach and player
Family found £40,000 for him to move to Spain and train.
Started playing when he was 3 years old.
Comercialisation is….
Making something available on the market; using something to make a profit.
Media is……
The main means of mass communication (televisions, radio, newspapers and internet)
What happened when TV coverage began?

What is the ‘golden triangle’ in sport?
The link between sport, media and sponsorship.
How can sport influence fashion?
Many activities require the ‘right’ equipment. Some brands of sports equipment can be fashionable (and expensive), as a result of media coverage. Sports stars make a lot of money by endorsing a companies equipment, like Rory Mcllroy in golf. Sales of sports equipment and clothing are influenced by the time of year. E.g tennis equipment prices will go up around the time of Wimbeldon because more people begin to play.
Advantages of commercialisation……
Can support athletes who might otherwise not be able to take part.
It brings sports to a wider audience, so it raises awareness.
It can support sport at a narional and international level.
Disadvantages of commercialisation……
Seat prices for many events may be too expensive for a lot of people
Beauty parade effect - most attractive athletes may get most support, and other good athletes miss out.
Marteking links may be inappropriate because they push products that are not part of a healthy lifestyle.
Gamesmanship is….
Bending the rules of the sport without actually braking them.
E.g time wasting in football.
Or taking PED in order to improve your performance.
