soap Flashcards
what happens during ester hydrolysis involving an alkali
ester =glycerol + carboxylic acid + alkali to form a salt which is soap
what is the structure of soap?
non polar tail (hydrophobic) and polar head (hydrophilic)
description of soap hydrophobic tail
bond easily to greasy stains doesn’t dissolve in water
description of soap hydrophilic tail
dissolves in water but not greasy stains
what happens to the soap molecule when is dissolves in grease?
covered in negative charge
what is agitation?
mixing soap, water and grease together
what does agitation cause?
ball like structures, knowns as globules
negative charge globules repel each other and the oil/ grease is suspended in water allowing it to be washed away
