Smuggling Flashcards
Why did smuggling increase?
increased in the 17th century because import duties (taxes on foreign goods) were placed on many goods e.g tobacco, alcohol and tea.-Smugglers brought goods into the country without paying the import duties and so were very popular with ordinary people because they could now buy expensive goods cheaply.
Where and when was smuggling carried out?
Carried out mostly at night, in Cornwall and Devon.
What type of people smuggled?
All kinds of people - including respectable people such as vicars - appreciated the cheapness of smuggled goods, or the ‘pay-off’ money from smugglers for allowing goods to be hidden in their barns or cellars.
What were smuggling gangs like?
Many smuggling gangs were very violent and numbered between 50-100 people.
