A

After winning the Civil War, Oliver Cromwell made himself Lord Protector He was a strict Puritan and imposed his religious beliefs on the country.

What were the new crimes that Oliver Cromwell created?

A
  • No longer allowed to play sport on a Sunday
  • Drinking alcohol and feasting was banned because it leads to bad behaviour. A large number of ale-houses were closed
  • Bear-baiting, cock-fighting, horse-racing and wrestling were banned.
  • Feasting and drinking at Christmas must end. Christmas Day is the most holy day of the year.
  • Betting and gambling were also forbidden.
  • Fines were imposed on people caught swearing and theatres closed down.
