Q
What new laws were introduced in Norman England?
A
- William I’s Forest Laws stopped peasants being able to hunt on what had previously been
common land (30% of land in England became ‘Royal Forest’ where only the King and
nobility could go hunting). Poaching was a ‘social crime’ because most Anglo-Saxons did
not view it as a crime. - Leaving the village became a crime= because of the feudal system. Serfs (peasants)
were like the property of their lord.

Outlaw info
A
- Outlaws were criminals over the age of 14 who ran away to escape punishment. Female
outlaws were called ‘waived’. - Outlaws no longer had the protection of the law.
- Outlaw gangs terrorised people e.g the Folville gang of 50 outlaws who kidnapped, raped,
murdered and stole over a period of 20 years. The leader of the gang, Eustace Folville
came from an extremely rich family.
