SMS and divide/multiplying Flashcards
What are the two internal communication systems in a animal?
The nervous system and the endocrine system
What must multicellular organisms do with each other for survival?
Communicate
What is the nervous system composed of?
The brain, the spinal cord and the nerves
What is the central nervous system composed of?
The brain and the spinal cord
What are the five sense organs that detect changes in environmental conditions?
Taste, smell, touch, sight, and hearing
What transmits information along neurones?
Electrical impulses
What are neurones separated by?
Tiny gaps called Synapse
What do nerve cells have to link with other nerve cells?
They have long connections
What is the cerebrum for?
For memory, thinking and personality.
What is the cerebellum for?
Co-ordinate a muscle movement
What is the Medulla in charge of?
Essential functions like breathing and heart rate
Name three reflex responses?
Blinking, coughing and sneezing
What is a reflex action?
A reflex action is a rapid response to a stimulus which indicates danger.
What does a reflect action do?
Reflex actions protect the organism and increase chance of survival.
CNS processes information from the senses and sends out messages along motor neurones. Why?
To bring about a response in either a muscle or a gland.
What are the two main organs in the endocrine system?
Gland and hormones
What is gland?
An organ or a group of cells which produce a substance
What is a hormone?
A chemical messenger that is produced by glands
What does the endocrine system release into the blood stream?
Hormones
What does thyroid produce? And what is the target organ?
The thyroid produces thyroxine and the target organ is muscle tissue.
What does the adrenal produce and what does it target?
The adrenal produces adrenaline and it targets the organs heart, liver, brain and muscles
What does the pancreas produce? And what is the target organ?
The pancreas produces insulin and glucagon and they both target the liver organ
What are the three stages that the endocrine works by?
- Hormone released into the blood.
- Hormones attach to receptors on the surface if the target organ cells.
- The hormone then causes a response.
