Q

Why is diffusion important to unicellular organisms

A

It’s the way in which useful substances move into the cell and waste moves out

Q

What is xylem

A

Transports water and minerals up from the root to the leaves of a plant. Xylem vessels are made up from dead cells. These cells are strengthened by lignin deposits often in rings or spirals

Q

What is phloem

A

A living tissue composed of sieve tubes and companion cells. Transports sugars made by photosynthesis, from leaves to the non-food producing part of the plant. E.g.root and fruit.
Can be transported up or down

Q

Describe the first stage of photosynthesis

A

Photolysis.
The light reaction where light energy is trapped by chlorophyll and converted into chemical energy in the form of ATP and water is split into hydrogen and oxygen

15
Q

What are made in stage 1 and passed on to stage two

A

Hydrogen and ATP

16
Q

What diffuses out of cells and exits through the stomata that is made in stage one

A

Oxygen

17
Q

Describe stage two if photosynthesis

A

Carbon fixation.

Where carbon dioxide is converted to glucose using hydrogen and ATP

18
Q

In a plant what is glucose used for

A
  • an immediate energy source (substrate for respiration)
  • cellulose for cell walls
  • starch
  • converted into fats and proteins
19
Q

What is a limiting factor

A

Any factor which reduces the rate of photosynthesis.

E.g. Carbon dioxide concentration, light intensity, temperature, and water availability
