Plant Power Flashcards
Hat is the equation for photosynthesis
Sunlight
Carbon dioxide+ water——————–> glucose + oxygen
Chlorophyll
How do plants make there own food
Photosynthesis
What does diffusion allow
Substances to enter and leave cells
What is diffusion
The movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Why is diffusion important to unicellular organisms
It’s the way in which useful substances move into the cell and waste moves out
Why is diffusion important to multicellular organisms
How gas exchange takes place
Why do multicellular organisms need transport systems
To deal with the surface area volume ratio issue
Explain the need for transport system in a plant
To transport water, minerals and sugars
What is osmosis
The movement of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. (Down a concentration gradient) through a cell membrane
What is required for photosynthesis and transport of materials
Water
What is xylem
Transports water and minerals up from the root to the leaves of a plant. Xylem vessels are made up from dead cells. These cells are strengthened by lignin deposits often in rings or spirals
What is phloem
A living tissue composed of sieve tubes and companion cells. Transports sugars made by photosynthesis, from leaves to the non-food producing part of the plant. E.g.root and fruit.
Can be transported up or down
What is transpiration
The loss of water by evaporation through the leaves
Most water is lost by evaporation through the stomata
What are stomata
Pores in the leaf that can be opened and closed, controlled by guard cells
Describe the first stage of photosynthesis
Photolysis.
The light reaction where light energy is trapped by chlorophyll and converted into chemical energy in the form of ATP and water is split into hydrogen and oxygen
