Who is at risk of smoking?
o If you live in a remote area you are two times more likely to be a smoker can paired with major cities
o If you live in a low SES area you are three times more likely to be a smoker compare to high SES areas
o If you’re unemployed you are 1.7 times more likely to smoke then employed people
o If you identify as aboriginal or Torres strait Islander you are 2.6 times more likely to be a smoker compare to the non-indigenous population.
Programs: Quit campaign
o QUIT CAMPAIGN
Quit aims to decrease the prevalence of smoking by assisting smokers to quit, and to prevent the uptake of smoking in non-smokers. Quit employs a range of actions to achieve their aims.
• Effectiveness
o Number of regular smokers in Victoria has decreased
o Successful through strategies such as price increases and bans on smoking indoors
o There are over 800,000 Victorians not smoking today
• Ottawa Charter reflection
o Quit develops personal skills by providing advice and practical skills for quitting
o Quit strengthens community action by being the work of the Cancer Council, which is funded by VicHealth and the Victorian Government
o Quit reorients health services by providing a free online training program for health professionals. These courses provide health professionals with skills such as informing about the effects of smoking, and the benefits to the patient/client of quitting
Effectiveness of smoking reduction programs in improving health
Australia has been successful in reducing smoking prevalence over many years through the use of many strategies, including advertising bands, bands on smoking indoors an outdoor public spaces, plain packaging, price increases, restriction on sales to miners, public education and media campaigns.
