How does smoking contribute to the pathogenesis of periodontal disease (non biological/molecular)?
A
- vasoconstriction- stops bleeding; “reduced blood flow to the area”
- this can mask the early stages of the disease- no initial signs of gingivitis hence leads to progression of the disease

What are the consequences of smoking on gum health?
A
- specific bacteria responsivle for periodontitis is 2-3x higher in smolers
- tooth staining
- increased accumulation of calculus
- loose teeth, black triangles
- increased risk of losing teeth

What are the implications of smoking on periodontal treatment/other dental treatment?
A
- increased calculus accumulation can make cleaning harder
- implant failure rates are musch higher in smokers
