How does smoking contribute to the pathogenesis of periodontal disease (non biological/molecular)?

A
  • vasoconstriction- stops bleeding; “reduced blood flow to the area”
  • this can mask the early stages of the disease- no initial signs of gingivitis hence leads to progression of the disease

  • specific bacteria responsivle for periodontitis is 2-3x higher in smolers
  • tooth staining
  • increased accumulation of calculus
  • loose teeth, black triangles
  • increased risk of losing teeth
