Small intestine kura cloud Flashcards
How long is the small intestine
6m
Types of cells in the small intestine?
Enterocytes:
tall columnar epithelia with microvilli on the apical surface.
They are connected to each other by tight junctions
Goblet cells:
apical part of the cytosol is packed with mucin granules, which distorts the shape of the cell
Mucous consists of water and glycoproteins, and serves as a lubricant to facilitate gut passage.
Enteroendocrine cells:
Their sensory apparatus is in the apical portion.
what other functions does the enterocyte have?
the most abundant intestinal epithelial cell is responsible for chemical breakdown of nutrients.
how do goblet cells secrete mucous
Goblet cells secrete mucous by exocytosing granules
where are the mucosal folds closer together?
Closer in the jejunum compared with the duodenum
Describe the absorption of galactose in the small intestine?
Galactose is absorbed into the bloodstream via enterocytes. Like glucose, it is absorbed through the apical membrane via SGLT-1 transporter, concurrently with a sodium ion. Galactose, is then absorbed through the basolateral membrane via GLUT-2 through facilitated diffusion
