Q

Types of cells in the small intestine?

A

Enterocytes:
tall columnar epithelia with microvilli on the apical surface.
They are connected to each other by tight junctions

Goblet cells:
apical part of the cytosol is packed with mucin granules, which distorts the shape of the cell

Mucous consists of water and glycoproteins, and serves as a lubricant to facilitate gut passage.

Enteroendocrine cells:
Their sensory apparatus is in the apical portion.

Q

Describe the absorption of galactose in the small intestine?

A

Galactose is absorbed into the bloodstream via enterocytes. Like glucose, it is absorbed through the apical membrane via SGLT-1 transporter, concurrently with a sodium ion. Galactose, is then absorbed through the basolateral membrane via GLUT-2 through facilitated diffusion
