Slope Flashcards
What is the equation for slope?
m= rise
run
*NO UNITS*
Example: rise/run
=5/9
=5/9
Which way is the rise and which way is the run?
Right is the height and Run is the length
What does a zero slope look like?

What does an undefined slope look like?

What does a positive slope look like?

What does a negative slope look like?

What is the equation to find the rise and run of a slope on a graph?
y2-y1
x2-x1
In a slope fraction which number represents y and x?
Top= y
Bottom= x
Review what the equation y=mx+b means

What is a Frst Difference or Delta Y coloumn?
A column on your table of values that tells the dfference between one number to the next. This helps you to see patterns
Example: from 3 to 5 the first difference is 2
If the first differnce is the same throughout what will your graph look like?
A straight line (Linear Realationship)
If your first difference is different throughout what will your graph look like?
A curved line
(Non-Linear)
What is Direct Variation?
When a line passes through the origin (0,0)
What is the equation for the constant of variation?
y= kx
Example: Fred earns $5 an hour
The constant of variation is 5
What is Constant of Variation?
The thing in the equation that can change based on other factors
Example: Money earned derpending on the number of hours you have worked
What is * Partial Variation?*
A line when graphed is straight but doesnt cross through the origin
What are the steps taken to put a y=mx+b equation into standard form (Ax+ By+C=0)?
Example: y= 2x-3
Step 1) Move all terms to the left side *Electric Fence
-2x+y+3=0
Step 2) Get rid of any fractions or decimals
Step 3) Ensure A is positive (x-1)
2x-y-3=0
*Remember the equation should go X- Y - Number*
Intercepts:
What are intercepts?
Where a line crosses through the x or y axis
Intercepts:
What steps do you take to find the x and y intercepts of a line?
Example: y= x+6
Substitute your variables and solve, making sure your 0 and the intercept you were trying to find are in the right order. Graph your points.
X Intercept Y Intercept
y=0 x=0
y=x+6 y=x+6
0=x+6 y=0+6
-6=x y=6
(-6,0) (0,6)
What are Parallel lines?
2 lines that never cross and remain the same distance apart
What are Perpendicular Lines?
2 lines that intersect at a right angle (90º)
What is a linear system?
A set of two or more linear equations that are considered at the same time
