Algerbra Flashcards
Variable
A Letter used to represent a number
Substituting Values:
How do you solve an equation using substituing values?
Replace each letter in the equation with its given value
Example: 4x+2y
If x= 2
y= 3
=4(2)+2(3)
=8+6
=14
Binomial
An algebraic expression that contains two terms.
Constant
A term that contains only a number and no variables.
Like Terms
Algebraic terms with the same exponent
Monomial
An algebraic expression that has only one term.
Polynomial
Another Name for an algebraic expression
Trinomial
An algebraic expression that contains three terms.
Un-like Terms
Algebraic terms that have different variables or the same variable with different exponents.
Term
A part of an equation that consists of a coeffcient and a variable
Degree of Term
The sum of all the exponents in a term.
*Variables with no exponent=1*
Degree of Polynomial
Degree of the largest term.
Adding Polynomials:
What steps do you take when adding Polynomials?
1) Apply integer rules to remove the brackets
2) Group Like Terms
3) Solve the equation
Example: (3x+5) + (2x+8)
=3x+5+2x+8
=3x+2x+5+8
=5x+13
Subtracting Polynomials:
What steps do you take when subtracting polynomials?
Step 1) Drop the subtraction sign
Step 2) Change all of the signs to the opposite in the brackets that follow
Multiplying Monomials:
What steps to you take when multiplying monomials?
Step 1) Multiply Coefficients
Step 2) Add exponents on like variables
Example: 2 (3a4)
=6a4
