Adding Fractions:

What must you do first before adding fractions?

A

Find the common denominator

Example: 2/5 and 1/3

The common denominator is 15.

5x3=15

3x5=15

From there you add as normal keeping the denominator the same

Adding Fractions:

How do you add 2 mixed fractions?

A

Step 1) Find the common denominator of the fractions

Step 2) Add together the whole numbers and numerators

Example: 8 3/7 + 1 7/14

2x7=14

7x2=14

=8 6/14 + 1 7/14

=9 13/ 14

Once you’ve turned your fractions into improper fractions how do you subtract?

A

Find the Common Denominator and add

Then Take your new fractions (With the same denominator) and subtract

Dividing Fractions:

What steps must you take to divide fractions?

A

Step 1) Take the second fraction in the equation and flip the numerator and denominators

Step 2: Multiply the tops and bottoms together in both fractions

*Remember to always put fractions in lowest terms

Example: 4/5 and 1/3

=4/5 and 3/1

= 12/ 5

= 2 2/5
