Sleep-wake disorder Flashcards
Define Insomnia disorder
difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
Can be independent, comorbid with mental disorder, another sleep disorder, and medical condition
Define Hypersomnolence disorders
sleeps too mucha dn feels excessively tired despite normal or because of prolonged quantity of sleep.
Define Parasomnias
marked by unusual behaviour, experiences, or physiological events during sleep.
3 subtypes
- non-REM movement sleep arousal disorders. incomplete awakening from sleep accompanied by either sleep walking of sleep terror disorder
- Nightmare disorder - which nightmares induce awakening repeatedly and cause distress and impairment
- REM sleep behaviour disorder vocal or motor behaviour during sleep.
Define Narcolepsy
marked by sleep attacks, usually with loss of muscle tone cataplexy
Define Breathing related sleep disorders
3 types
- Obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea - apneas and hypopnea that occur repeatedly during sleep, causing snoring and daytime sleepiness
- central sleep apnea - cheyne- stokes breathing in addition to apneas and hypopnea
- Sleep related hypoventilation causes increase CO2 from decrease respiration.
Define Restless legs syndrome
compulsive movement of legs during sleep
Define Circadian Rhythm sleep wake disorder
pattern of sleep disruption that alters or misaligns a person’s circadian system = insomnia or excessive sleeping
- Delayed sleep phase types - sleep wake times are several hours later than desired
- Advanced sleep phase type easier than usual sleep onset and wake up times
- irregular sleep wake type - fragmented sleep thought a 24hr with no major sleep period and no discernible sleep wake circadian rhythm
- Non 24 hr sleep wake type - circadian period not aligned with outside environment. most common among blind or visually impaired
- Shift work type
- unspecified type - doesn’t meet the above criteria.
