Define Parasomnias

A

marked by unusual behaviour, experiences, or physiological events during sleep.
3 subtypes
- non-REM movement sleep arousal disorders. incomplete awakening from sleep accompanied by either sleep walking of sleep terror disorder
- Nightmare disorder - which nightmares induce awakening repeatedly and cause distress and impairment
- REM sleep behaviour disorder vocal or motor behaviour during sleep.

Define Breathing related sleep disorders

A

3 types

  • Obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea - apneas and hypopnea that occur repeatedly during sleep, causing snoring and daytime sleepiness
  • central sleep apnea - cheyne- stokes breathing in addition to apneas and hypopnea
  • Sleep related hypoventilation causes increase CO2 from decrease respiration.

Define Circadian Rhythm sleep wake disorder

A

pattern of sleep disruption that alters or misaligns a person’s circadian system = insomnia or excessive sleeping

  • Delayed sleep phase types - sleep wake times are several hours later than desired
  • Advanced sleep phase type easier than usual sleep onset and wake up times
  • irregular sleep wake type - fragmented sleep thought a 24hr with no major sleep period and no discernible sleep wake circadian rhythm
  • Non 24 hr sleep wake type - circadian period not aligned with outside environment. most common among blind or visually impaired
  • Shift work type
  • unspecified type - doesn’t meet the above criteria.
