Difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep or early morning wakening
Reduced sleep quantity and quality
At least three times a week for a 3 months for a diagnosis to be made
Types of insomnia?
Psychological Paradoxical Adjustment Inadequate sleep hygiene Idiopathic Behavioural in childhood
Limit setting sleep disorder?
Inadequate enforcement of bedtimes by caregiver
Sleep onset association disorder?
Sleep onset is impaired by absence of certain object or circumstance
Nocturnal eating syndrome?
Cannot sleep without eating
Paradoxical insomnia?
Complains of little sleep with no evidence of sleep disturbance
Drugs most commonly associated with insomnia?
Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors
Dopamine agonists
SSRIs
Consequences of insomnia?
Reduced quality of life Increased psychiatric disorders Reduced work performance Self medication Increased risk of cardiovascular disease
What is hypersomnia?
Sleeping too much
Drowsiness at inappropriate times
Prolonged transition to fully aroused state on waking
What is narcolepsy?
Excessive daytime sleepiness Falling asleep almost instantly Sleep paralysis Sudden loss of strength (cataplexy) Hallucinations

Self explanatory

What is REM behaviour disorder?
Violence and agitation during REM sleep
What are the differences between nightmares and sleep terrors
Terrors - early in night, autonomic arousal, amnesia of episode, unresponsive to calming
Nightmares - early in morning, wakes up, repetition of nightmares, can remember dream
Sleep walking?
Early in night
No recollection
Runs in families
Physiologically normal
