What are the two functions of sleep?
Protective and restorative
How is sleep protective?
Evolutionary, kept us safe from predators
How is sleep restorative?
Restores physical well being
Relieves stress and anxiety
Restores ability to cope and concentrate
What is sleep?
State of altered consciousness throughout which varying degree of stimuli produce wakefulness
an active and complex rhythmic state involving a progression of repeated cycles
What is rest?
A state of decreased activity with the consequent feeling of being refreshed
What occurs with REM sleep derivation?
Excitability
confusion
Emotional Lability
What occurs with NREM sleep deprivation?
Withdrawal
Excessive sleepiness
Hyporesponsiveness
What occurs with NREM + REM sleep deprivation?
Fatigue
Perceptual distortions
Decreased concentration and judgment
What objective observations show a person is in REM?
Vital signs increase
Depressed DTR and Muscle tone
What objective observations show a person is in NREM?
Vital signs decrease
How many hours of sleep do infants need? Naps?
10-12 hrs
several naps
How many hours of sleep do toddlers need? Naps?
12 in early toddlerhood
8-10 at end
2 naps in beginning 1 at the end
How many hours of sleep do preschoolers need? Naps?
9-16 (12 average)
naps decrease stopping at around 5yo
How many hours of sleep do school aged children need?
10-12 decreasing to 8-10
How many hours of sleep do adolescents need?
9-10 (7-7.5 average)
