Sleep Flashcards
What happens REM sleep
-muscle paralysis
-eye movements
Beta activity
Aroused state, doing stuff
Alpha activity
Relaxation state
Theta activity
When people are drowsy, prominent during estly stages of sleep
Delta activity
Deepest stages of slow-wave sleep
Synchronized low frequency, large amplitude
Lesion to Suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)
No 24h cycle in the brain and body. Sleep and wake up at random times
What is controlling how sleepy you feel?
Adenosine. The level rises up during waking hours and fall rapidly during sleep
Flip-flop circuit
Neurons on the ventral lateral preoptic area (vlPOA) of the hypothalamus promoye sleep.
Reciprocal inhibition. If one region is more active (say wake-promoting system) it inhibits the other (in that case, the vlPOA neurons)
Prevents 2 things from happening at the same time
Narcolepsy
sleep disorder characterized by periods of excessive daytime sleepinedd and irresistible urges to sleep as well as sleep paralysis and cataplexy
Related to desth of orexin neurons (neuron that promotes wakefulness)
Cataplexy
When complete muscle paralysis suddenly occurs when someone is awake
