Learning And Memory Flashcards
Long-term potentiation
Long-term increase in the strength of the connection between two neurons
Long term depression (LDP)
Long-term decrease in the strength of the connection between two neurons
2 factors that determine if the synapse gets stronger or weaker
1- how often the synapse was activated
2- how often that cell actually spiked as a response
Nmda receptor is gated by 2 things
1- glutamate has to bind to it for it to open
2- in order for the current to flow in, the membrane potential has to be a certain amount
Perceptual learning
The more you perceive things the more you are able to recognize them as distinct entities
Motor learning
The more we do an action, the better we get at it
Relational learning
Learning relationships among individual stimuli
Stimulus-reponse learning
Learning to perform a particular behavior when a particular stimulus is present. Includes classic and instrumentam conditioning
How u move considering your environment
IMPLICIT AND EXPLICIT
Where does memory consolidation takes place?
In the hippocampus. Not the location of short term or long term memory, involed in the conversion. You still have short term and long term memory if damage to hippocampus
Is hippocampus needed to remember old events?
No! frontal lobe can reactivate on its own
Injecting anastbesic in the hippocampus (like if no hippocampus)
Rodent after 30 days, can remember how to do the maze (after 30 days, dont need the hippocampus anymore, the cortex knows how to do it)
In humans, memories take years to become hippocampal independent
